and punishment are viewed from strikingly different perspectives. As one can see, from an examination of these films, the cultural impact of these films is immense. A group of
young, bored teenagers, living in a stifling conservative small town, decide to flaunt propriety and dance naked in the woods. Sound like a b grade teen flick? Think again. In
Arthur Millers, The Crucible, crime and its consequences are explored when one of the girls decides to make the ultimate rebellious statement by drinking a charm to kill her lovers
wife. In doing so she looses a series of events which ultimately spin out of control, resulting in the Salem Witch Trials. Some of the scenes which depict the
overall theme of consequences for ones actions include the original accusation by Abigail. She has been caught doing something against their societys dictates. Instead of accepting the responsibility for her
actions, she claims that she was bewitched. This movie is also about power and its ability to corrupt. Abigail, as a young woman in the village, has little or
no power in comparison to the men. However, after the men take her seriously when she turns in Tituba, Abigail realizes that she now holds an awesome power for a
woman. She has the ability to ruin peoples lives. This gives her a great deal of power and it corrupts absolutely. As Judge Danforth states: "We cannot expect those afflicted
to admit their guilt, so we have to rely on the victims"(Miller, 2003). What this film clearly shows is the ability for the lure of immediate power to have
tremendous influence over the young. This also shows the readiness of society to believe the worst without much corroborating evidence. It is also about adolescents taking responsibility for their actions.
