of a merger between two older businesses in Ireland, the company in 2005 had enjoyed 36 years of unrivaled growth, moving from the role of local player in the Irish
construction market to one of the top five building materials companies in the world (Maroney, 2007). The company management to achieve its growth, and will likely continue on its growth
path, by maintaining a small headquarters, and growing inorganically, through the acquisition of companies in the markets it chose to target. In this paper, well examine the business environment in
which the company operates, and detail how its growth has taken place. According to the companys website, CRH is divided into
six regional businesses, three in the Americas and three in Europe (Key Facts, 2009). The group center supports these divisions through Europe Materials, Europe Products, Europe Distribution and Americas Materials,
Americas Products and Americas Distribution (Key Fact, 2009). Though the market has slowed somewhat, and though CRHs revenues have taken somewhat of a hit (which well see later on in
this paper), the company is still continuing its strategy of aggressive acquisition, dedicated management training, a firm strategic framework and a continued "act local, think global" mentality. The business
environment facing the company The construction materials market, in which CHR operates, consists of the manufacture and distribution of brick, cement, aggregates
and sand/gravel (Global Construction Materials, 2009; see also Built to Perform, 2007). Consolidation seems to be the name of the game for this industry, with the past several years marked
by large mega-mergers and partnerships (Keeping Up with the Jones, 2007). On the plus side, the global environment for concrete block and brick manufacturers and distributors seems to be moving
