will be important to the development of this character. There are numerous schools of thought on the process, including John McPhees The Headmaster. In the end, however, the character must
be alive in the writers mind, and not just a derivative of someones criteria. However, McPhees Headmaster is an excellent starting point in that he brings to mind a few
characteristics which make any character three dimensional. Many writers when they begin to work on a novel or short story do quick sketches or character biographies in order to
keep facts and figures straight. The longer the writer works and lives with the character the more certain features will come into focus. One such feature will be the most
obvious: body type, the physical presentation of the character, so to speak. For example, the student can choose to write about a male character, early forties, tall, angular, sharp
cheekbones. But, this is only a barebones sketch. The student will want to elaborate on these characteristics. For example, the angular, sharp cheekbones, could be rephrased or described as cheekbones
as harsh as the life theyd been forced to live through, with no nope of better times ahead. The craggy countenance, jutting brow, and the tight set of his jaw
made all who met him feel immediately dwarfed by his mountainous frame. Did the words actually say he was a mountain? Nope. But, notice that all of the words
allude to the fact that this character is tall, gaunt and formidable, like a mountain. This begins to suggest a name: Parker Hill. The student can then go on to
describe the other noticeable features of the man, his feet, hands, eyes and mouth. When one begins to describe the physical features of a character, invariably stories will come
