these questions. What is most compelling is the fact that the creation myths of all the worlds peoples all reflect many of the same aspects. The idea of birth, death and renewal are present as well as the belief in some divine being or beings outside of themselves: a Creator. How could the worlds civilizations, without the benefit of interregional communication, develop many of the same belief systems and creation myths? EGYPTIAN CREATION MYTHS In the beginning of time there was only a watery chaos until Atum ruled it into being. But there was no place for Atum to rest in the water so a hill was created. Atum is commonly considered to be non-gendered, but rather having both the aspects of the feminine and the masculine. Atums first act was to create more gods because he was lonely in the world. Shu and Tefnut were the first children, whose sole purpose was to establish a social order including the principles of order and the principles of Life(Sproul 1979, pg. 77, see also Leeming 1996). While Shu and Tefnut were fulfilling their destiny they were separated from Atum. Atum searched for them and when they returned Atum wept great tears. Where his tears fell, mankind was created. In time Atum decided that there should be more Earth and to this task Atum gave Shu and Tefnut. They created Geb (Earth) and Nut (sky). In turn Geb and Nut gave birth to Osiris and Isis of infamous legend. The fundamental values one sees arising from this creation myth is the sacred belief in a divine unity of both male and female creative powers.
