hearing-impaired man and a group of gang members upset by their friends death. Communication Barriers and Interviewing the Witness All three witnesses
pose a challenge when it comes to the interview. The hearing-impaired man because of his fear, the gang members because of their bias and the child -- because hes a
child. Once upon a time, interviewing kids when it came to a crime involved "leading the witness," in other words, yes-no questions and suggestive techniques. A recent study has shown,
however, that there has been an increase in the use of cued recall questions, rather than open-ended questions (Thoresen et al, 2006). In this case, therefore, cued response is the
best, both for the child and the hearing-impaired man. But what about the gang members? This one is difficult, as, more than
likely, vengeance will be the first thought on these kids minds. Working with gangs is a tricky scenario, but it can be done. McGarrell et al (2006) have suggested that
face-to-face interviews, combined with a particular outreach would have some effect. The important thing here is to approach the witnesses as though theyre partners in solving the crime, and informing
them that revenge isnt the best method here. Select the gangs leader and work with him. Potential Technology Uses In this
case, there are two technology tools that could be used in trying to solve this crime. One is likely to be a video tape at the scene of the crime.
Most gas stations these days have running video, to prevent people from driving off before they pay for gas. This may, or may not, be helpful.
