like an unassuming African American woman with a broad smile and a heart for the written word. Her name is Maya Angelou. Maya Angelou, it can be said, life spans
almost the entire scope of the trials of the minority in the United States. She writes poetry and novels which speak of her own experiences with her family which include
such things as hiding from the Klu Klux Clan, experiencing segregation and prejudice first hand, suffered from a broken home, and even rape and murder. From these experiences one
can either walk away scarred for life, or changed for life. Maya was both scarred and changed by the events that surrounded her growing up years, and it can be
said that in the novel, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, the reader gains a glimpse at the scar and is able to see the courageous spirit behind it.
Her spirit and gift of encouragement found its outlet in her written works. It would seem that in many of her poems, and there are many to chose from, that
she urges women to listen to their own hearts and their own internal rhythms, rather than dancing to the beat of someone elses drum. In fact, much of her poetry
speaks of breaking free, not only from oppression and prejudice, but also from those things that bind and keep one from achieving their lifes goals. These lifes goals seem
to also revolve around her great faith in Christianity and God. Much of her works speak of commitment to church and family, to something beyond oneself. It is as if
