that is moving inexorably toward the 20th century, even as the areas inhabitants work hard to try to preserve the older way of life that theyre used to. This has been common for much of New England - the area itself tends to be quite provincial and overall resistant to change, which is something that Jewett points out frequently throughout her narrative. The town she depicts, Dunnet Landing, was once a bustling city (a ship-building city), but now has fallen on hard times, because shipping is an industry falling on hard times. The question well try to answer in this paper is how Jewetts narrator uses genre and other techniques to paint a picture of this small town that is caught in the grips of its own past success, yet current problem - one that did quite well when the industry was thriving, but now is being left behind as other industries have arisen and taken its place. Jewett, for the most part, tends to regard her New England towns through the hindsight of rose-colored lenses - the fact that they were once great paradises, but through the curse of modern times, these towns have fallen upon hard times. She does this with her first view of Dunnet Landing, as she describes it as a "coast town . . . more attractive than other maritime villages of eastern Maine." She goes into great detail about the shore, the woods and even the "few houses which seemed to be securely wedged . . ." in between the scenery, all of which are guaranteed to spur a "falling in love at first sight" as she puts it.
