to the job. Are these skills and attitudes enough to be successful in the field of social work? To answer this question,
we turned to John Hodgins article "What to Expect in the Field of Human Services." In following one particular social worker,
the one main point that was stressed in the article is that people entering in this field tend to be motivated by a real chance to create positive change both
in people and their communities. In the field of social work and human services, there is definitely a focus on helping others find themselves, find safety and find health or
success in their lives (Hodgins, 2005). As a result, anyone entering this field should be a self-described "people person," who finds that helping others is its own reward. The reason
for this is because the monetary rewards are not as high as they would be in other fields, especially for the hours put in.
Most counseling and human services jobs are dubbed "paraprofessional," meaning that they arent clinical or medical (Hodgins, 2005). Paraprofessionals can be, however, part of a team that might
include psychiatrists, doctors or psychiatric nurses (Hodgins, 2005). In other words, team work is a huge skill asset for anyone entering this field.
