an overview (a rather detailed one) of the impact of federal economic policy in transforming the American South from the New Deal to 1980 (when the book was published). The
South, with its roots in agriculture from the start, ran into problems during the Civil War, as most of the munitions factories were in the North, allowing final destruction of
southern territories. But even following the war, when the nation was supposedly reunited, the South always was a poorer cousin of the more prosperous north. Though there were cosmopolitan cities
in the South, it was generally concluded that most of the intelligentsia lived in the northern part of the nation. Basically, from
the start, the South was considered a wayward, backward area, and Franklin D. Roosevelts New Deal policy was responsible for promoting programs to totally renovate and redo the economy of
the South. Yet in the 1950s, things changed, with Keynesians taking the reigns, and replacing New Deal structure and reform, and moving the role toward national security state. Basically, the
South was targeted (because this was the Cold War period) for a variety of military and growth-oriented programs. (There is a reason, for example, while many military bases are located
in Southern states, rather than Northern ones). But Roosevelt wasnt helping the South out of the goodness of his heart - he
recognized that many of his allies in Congress were from the South; and because of that, he was interested in bringing the South into national alliance with the northern half
of the country. But he wasnt all good and benefactor - during his second term, he ended up forcing a minimum wage bill on the South, as he believed that
