doing business. Part of the problem is its location in Central America (and Central America has been the destination of a great deal of strife and fighting). But with U.S.
trade talks with Central America and Costa Rica being so successful (Washington Times, 2004), there becomes more and more incentive for doing business in this Central American state. It is,
after all, one of the more prosperous and stable nations of Central America (Washington Times, 2004). This does not mean, however, that
doing business in Costa Rica is similar to doing business in the United States. For one thing, the business/employment culture is somewhat
different than that were familiar with in the U.S. There is, for example, a great deal of debt in this nation, and personal income tax rates are actually low, despite
this (Torgler, 2004). Furthermore (and what could be considered important when it comes to the business climate here), there tends to be
a very low degree of privatization of business in this country, with a very strong commitment to the welfare state (Torgler, 2004). This means, that when negotiating (or doing business
here), many of the businesses do have government intervention, which needs to be kept in mind in this particular situation. Having said
that, the business culture in Costa Rica involves the fact that most businesspeople tend to like to do business with personal contacts, especially among foreign suppliers (Exportinfo.org, 2004).
Furthermore, most of the business executives speak English (Exportinfo.org, 2004). The hours of the business day in Costa Rica are either from 8:00 a.m.
