basically in different countries solely to turn a profit, these companies many times are pressured to do the right thing. Many times, if an MNE is ignorant, or indifferent, this
can lead to negative activism - or boycotts. Its the belief of many activists that if a corporation is going to send a company into a particular country, that corporation
has a responsibility to right wrongs, even if they are not the perpetrator of those wrongs. Among one of the better-known stories
and case studies in this particular issue is Shell Oil, its involvement in Nigeria, and how far its moral/ethical reach needed to be.
The huge oil company opened its oil production facility in Nigeria during the mid-1950s and in more recent years, operated its Nigerian interests through Shell Petroleum Development Company
of Nigeria, a joint venture between Shell, Elf and Agip and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (owned by the Nigerian government). The majority of the workers for this entity are
Nigerian, with close to two-thirds of the employees coming from the Niger Delta region. Nigeria, however, is anything but a calm
country. Much of its history has been characterized by violence and military coups. Though democratic elections did take place in the early 1990s, and despite the fact that Chief Moshood
