Even without knowing the organization, a person can get a good idea of what the culture of an organization is like, just from taking a look at the offices. In this case, weve been asked to look at an organization and discuss how the "place," i.e., the office itself, reflects the corporate culture. Because we havent been given a particular company on which to focus, well focus on the office layout of the former Electronic Data Systems (EDS) in Dallas, TX, which was bought out by Hewlett-Packard a few years ago. EDS had a sprawling campus in the Dallas suburb of Plano, TX. The main office was open and full of light. The floors were open, and employees worked in cubicles. Management did have offices, but there was really no such thing as a "corner office." Because of the layout of the building, there really was no "top floor" to differentiate senior management from the rest of the corporation. The company didnt divide its office space by seniority or rank but rather, by departments. Though the layout was predominantly that of a team orientation, there were very strict rules in terms of what could, or could not, be put on desks. Family photos were allowed, but posters and other things were not. The only thing allowed on the cubicle walls, for example, were memos and work-related things.
