of this lack of recognition, the least of which is the fact that of his great tragedies, Coriolanus pales in comparison. There are many reasons that Coriolanus fails to sustain the audiences interest, including one-dimensional characters, an inflexible plot, and the lack of dramatic tension. Coriolanus opens to a revolt by the citizens of Rome because of a grain shortage. Caius Marcius, a leading senator in Rome is viewed as being the chief culprit behind the grain shortage and the people blame him for the impending famine(All Shakespeare). In an attempt to placate the commoners the Senators appoint five tribunes to protect the interests of the peasants. It is a stopgap measure at best. However, this revolt is interrupted by a rebellion by the Volscians. Marcius leaves the city (more thankful than not) and manages to route the Volscians in their own capital. The men change Marcius name to Coriolanus, and hence the title of the play. Unfortuntately, not everyone shares in this perception of Marcius and Tullus Aufidius sets himself up as Marcius (Coriolanus) greatest enemy. In this first act, then, one can see that the characters, and there are many who are introduced, are not multidimensional at all. In essence, one sees powerful and greedy men pitted against one another. As a reader, and as an audience member, one does not have any sort of emotional attachment to any of the characters presented. Therefore, one could care less that Marcius has gone off to war, nor does one have any sympathy for his wife who must remain behind while he goes to make war in Volscia.
