shipping chains. But FedExs reputation for being a speedy shipper doesnt just happen overnight; rather, the organizations processes and control mechanisms are carefully coordinated to ensure that packages are effectively
and efficiently handled throughout the entire logistics chain. What, actually, is a control system, or control mechanisms? Also known as "process control," among
other terms, a control system is a "means by which a variable set of quantities is held constant," or if consistency isnt an issue, that variables are managed on a
controlled and consistent way (Control System, 2010). Control systems have been used throughout history, from ancient Roman times (maintaining water flows in aqueducts) to computers and their uses of automated
control systems (Control System, 2010). When applied to an organization, control mechanisms help a company move towards its goals. In the case of FedEx, the companys control mechanisms help in
areas of planning (where to build distribution centers) organizing (how to get systems and software to talk with one another), leading (ensuring that implementation and operations are on time) and
controlling (implementing a system with continual feedback to improve processes). FedEx is one company that has brought its control mechanisms to a fine
art, particularly on the shipping end. Basically, when a package is shipped from the destination of origin to the final destination, all types of mechanisms kick into gear. One such
control mechanism is its distribution centers (which are automated with state-of-the-art products and operations). The decision as to where the centers are located involves a great deal of research and
study. Much of the United States, for example, has a great number of these automated distribution centers that are close to airports. Why? When a FedEx plane arrives from point
