had been a country of internal conflict for many decades. When Saddam Hussein came into power he believed that the way to rule his country was with a heavy hand.
As such, then, he engaged in political purges which included execution of those whom he suspected. These practices sound hideous to the West owing to the underlying differences in ideologies,
of the conflicting theories of structuralism, functionalism, phenomenology and symbolic interaction. Saddam decided that weapons and the military were the way to go, so he borrowed loads of money from
other Arab nations. He built a massive war machine. But, Kuwait, when it lowered its oil prices, cut the legs off of this machine. Iraq claimed that Kuwait had to
be drilling diagonally across the border and tapping their reserves, though they couldnt prove it. Whether they could prove it or not, it was enough reason to attack Kuwait. With
the annexation of Kuwait, he now controlled over twenty percent of the worlds oil reserves(The Gulf War). Not good. What was next, Bush wondered, Saudi Arabia? Structuralists believe that one
has to analyze any given situation based on the smallest unit of a larger system(Cosner 1977). Much like the basic principles underlying Marxism, structuralism denies the individual for the good
of the group. Functionalists believe that every state has the universal right to provide those elements which will strike a balance of power between mutually powerful people or countries(Cosner 1977).
Phenomenologists believe that appearances are what decisions are based upon and draws largely, or seems to draw upon, assumptions about something based upon cultural heritage, belief systems or experiential background(Cosner
1977). Lastly, symbolic interaction states that reality, as we perceive and conceive it, is a process, an unending dynamic relationship between subjects and objects, not a stable and concrete state
