by todays standards? One could make a good case for the modern hero existing in a class by himself in comparison to the heroes of old, and yet, they seem
to share many of the same characteristics, even in the modern age. It can be said that the hero is someone who lived by a certain moral code, or set
of rules that serve as a compass for the character when facing great and insurmountable odds(Rank 5). Oedipus held staunchly to his moral codes, and when he found that he
had erred so completely, even though he did so unknowingly, his only recourse was to take his own life. Even though many heroes may die in the end, death is
always faced head on by the characters and they do not flinch in the face of it. The hero is given a task to perform and in doing so derives
some sort of personal meaning from it. He may meet with a great series of misfortunes, but the hero endures, because it is this constant facing of death that defines
life. This is applicable whether the hero is Oedipus or a character from Hemingways works. Another point about the classical hero archetype as well as the modern hero, is that
almost all of them are loners. Even when they are surrounded by a large group of people, there is this inner stoicism, this inner torment that is for the hero
alone to bear. Therefore, it can be said that the hero is presented with a situation in which he cannot refuse to accept the proposal to begin a quest(Sagollo,
