struggle in nearly all of the areas, such as occupation, education and even in the arts. Both Angelina Grimke and Garland Anderson would break the molds by having their plays
produced, making them both the first African Americans to have a play produced and/or play on Broadway. The similarities do not, of course stop there, as both writers tend to
deal with similar issues of within their works. Angelina Grimke came from a family known for its abolitionist attitudes. Though she created a large body of work, most of it
would never see the light of day. Her play, Rachel, was commissioned by the NAACP as they wanted to further their agenda and depict the horrible act called lynching. The
play was produced and as such made Angelina Grimke the first African American to have a play produced. Her play deals with themes of social as well as racial justices.
The main protagonist is Rachel who is in love with the idea of having children of her own someday. "Ma dear, because I love them best, I pray God
every night to give me, when I grow up, little black and brown babies-to protect and guard"(Grimke 143). However, once she grows
up and begins to see how hard life is for an African American in society, she decides to never bring a child into the world. This play, then, is about
dreams not realized. The children represent dreams that the African American had, but would never be born because of the hostile atmosphere in which they must be raised. Later, as
a lynching takes place, Rachel must come to terms with living without children, and how she will deal with the compounded tragedy of her life. One of the most telling
