While "blaming it on the mother" is popular when it comes to putting a finger on why someone commits a crime or someone cant commit to love, clich?s aside, there tends to be a direct link between avoidant attachment (or avoidance attachment) and the tendency for someone to exhibit depressive or aggressive behavior. But its also important that researchers be careful not to assume that just because an individual had an insecure attachment as an infant, this automatically means that he or she will likely grow up to become depressed as an adolescent or adult. Researchers caution time and again that family dynamics and attachments are complex systems, and trying to blame one thing for behavior later on in life is probably not the best way to formulate a hypothesis. Coleman and Watson (2000) are among the many number of child and development researchers who note that the quality of an infants attachment to a primary caregiver (whether that caregiver be mom, dad, a nanny or some other main adult in the infants life) tends to bring about a positive outcome both during childhood and afterward. But its a lot more complex than simply noting that whether or not a mother bonds with her child will determine the childs development. The type of attachment is key here (Coleman and Watson, 2000). Avoidant detachment is defined as an "insecure attachment" (Coleman and Watson, 2000), and one in which attachment from the childs part is uncertain because of certain avoiding behaviors on the part of the mother.
