have come from this observed behavior of the executive and legislative branches of government. The founding fathers, when they outlined the articles in the Constitution, wanted to purposely form a
government that did not give any one person too much power or control over the process or the country. If they had learned anything from being subjects of the British
Empire, it was that a tightly controlled government with a King presiding was not a good idea and could lead to tyranny. Since they had already experienced this sort of
government, it was doubly assured through the composition of the new government that this should never have a way of happening. However, there were problems with the first drafts
of the Constitution and the Articles of Confederation. These initial attempts proved that there would have to be some sort of group within the governments structure that would serve to
counteract the power that the leader of the country could wield. Thus, the Constitution provided for a separation of powers. This separation of powers saw the creation of the three
separate branches of the government: legislative, executive and judicial. With this framework in place, then, it was assured that no one branch could overstep its bounds and thus deny
the ordinary citizen of assured rights and civilities. This is commonly called the system of checks and balances. This system has gone largely unchanged since its implementation during the early
