to society? Surely those who perpetuate these crimes, as they can be considered no less, realize that by denying a bright and gifted student entry into the college of his/her
choice, that in the long run they are only denying themselves the potential of a cure for cancer, or the solution for world violence. Sadly enough, the trends that brought
forth Affirmative Action, was indicative of a long history by the United States to keep the minority population on a lower echelon indefinitely. According to Macionis, this was a predictable
issue if one examines the pros and cons of Affirmative Action. The programs which have been in existence for well over three decades, while milestones in their day and time,
still have not leveled the playing field. Reform must come. "Defenders of Affirmative Action see it, first, as a sensible response to our nations racial and ethnic history, especially for
African Americans, who suffered through two centuries of slavery and a century of segregation under Jim Crow laws"(Macionis 2001, pg. 294). Keeping the black man
ignorant was just another tool that the white slave owners had of quelling the slave rebellions. But not all white people felt this way. In fact, there were many that
the black education movement have to thank for their refusal to obey a law which effectively denied knowledge to persons because of the color of their skin. One such person
was Prudence Crandall, a Quaker woman, who opened a school for black girls. There was such a backlash from her endeavors, most experts report, that the townspeople tried to burn
down the school. Many believed at this day and age that the black man and woman were not the same species as the white man and therefore it was making
