conflict management preference or style. As we are not certain what types of conflict management styles are involved in either scenario, for purposes of this paper, well present a particular
scenario. Before doing this, however, well discuss some types of conflict management. There are a variety of conflict management strategies, among the most common are avoidance, smoothing over differences, compromise
and collaboration Dee et al, 2004; see also Deutsch, 1973). Most of these are self-explanatory; avoidance involves simply hoping the problem will go away by ignoring it; smoothing over differences
is when everyone is asked to be on the same page so as to avoid conflict (Dee et al, 2004). Compromise and collaboration are probably the most effective - but
these also take the most work and sometimes arent used for that reason. Compromise involves each side being willing to change their stances for the good of a common goal,
while collaboration takes this one step further, by pairing everyone together toward that common goal (Dee et al, 2004; see also Brown and Eisenhardt, 1997). With these in mind, lets
take our hypothetical work place and call it an advertising agency. An ad agency is a hectic place - clients are very demanding, deadlines come all too soon and so
much is dependent on keeping those demanding clients happy. Into this must come the atmosphere of collaboration; the account executives need to collaborate with the creative team and vice versa.
Even internally, the creative team needs to have a solid collaboration - the copywriters, designers and production people need to be on the same page. In such an atmosphere, conflict
