top IT provider for the U.S. government (Hoovers Company Profiles, 2003). In addition, the companys CSC Credit Services unit offers consumer credit reporting through Equifax (Hoovers Company Profiles, 2003).
Despite the economic downturn, particularly as it pertains to high-tech, CSC has managed to withstand the industry downturn because of its various multi-year,
multi-billion dollar contracts (Hoovers Company Profiles, 2003). In addition, the company is in a position to react quickly. When CSC lost a $1 billion, 11-year deal forged in 1999 with
Enrons energy services unit (a deal that died because of Enrons financial scandals), it bounced back by signing a $1.6 billion deal to provide IT services to Motorola over a
10-year basis (Hoovers Company Profiles, 2003). In terms of competitive factors, CSC is in an industry in which barriers to entry are
becoming increasingly higher. In fact, if one were to examine a list of CSCs competitors (which would include IBM, Xerox and Hewlett-Packard) one would notice that much of the
competition has been around almost as long as CSC has. CSC has, in fact, spent much of its time in acquiring other smaller companies (Hoovers Company Profiles, 2003).
Interestingly enough however, CSC is not necessarily immune from what impact its clients. As noted earlier in this paper, CSCs relationship with Enron dissolved
because of the latters corporate financial scandals. A company less able and less flexible would not have been able to recover from such a loss.
