There are a variety of "basic" types of languages, but the ones well examine here are COBOL, Java and Prolog. COBOL, originally created in 1959 by the Short
Range Committee, is one of the basic types of languages, though isnt much in use today; its used primarily for calculations. Java, which was originally created to help program toasters
and microwave ovens, is used with embedded systems (Computer Programming Languages, 2009). Java (which we typically see with graphic-intensive or games programs) is a powerful program that helps manipulate texts
and various graphics (Computer Programming Languages, 2009). Finally, Prolog relies on backtracking so that answers are described, rather than calculated (Computer Programming
Languages, 2009). This program is used when the programmer is building a program in which the user knows what is wanted, but doesnt care about the sequencing process that brought
the result (Computer Programming Languages, 2009). Discuss possible reasons why so many different programming languages exist. Once upon a time, computers
had one function - calculation. As a result, only one language (such as COBOL) was necessary. However, as computers became more sophisticated and more was demanded of them (and they
shrank in size), different programs were needed to keep up with the demand. These days, computers are still asked to calculate. Theyre also asked to store data, support interfaces, network
with other computers and so on. As a result, different programming languages exist, depending on whether a program is required to calculate, store, sequence and so on. Describe the
relationship between the computer program and how a computer processes and stores data. A computer program is defined as a set of
