When one looks at these kids movies - "Cars," "Shrek," "Kung Fu Panda," and even this summers offerings including "Brave," "Madagascar 3" and "Ice Age: Continental Drift," even someone unfamiliar with animation or film understands that todays animated films are far different from offerings even 20 years ago. Gone, it seems, are the animated "cels," the picture and films over which animators labored over for hours on end to create seemingly fluid scenes. Instead, kid and adult movie-goers are treated to real-life images of cartoon characters. Even the backgrounds are real enough to touch. CGI animation has become so pervasive that, by 2006, New York Times writer Laura Holson pointed out that "with more than a dozen computer-animated movies being readied for release . . . Hollywood is facing viewer fatigue worthy of Sleeping Beauty" (p. C1). One doesnt really see cel animation any more. Rather, thanks to Pixar, Dreamworks and other studios popping up in their wake, computer-generated images and technology have changed the way in which animated movie cartoons are produced and viewed. CGI Timeline/History Before CGI came to consciousness in the 1980s, animation techniques came in two versions: Drawn and model (also known as stop-motion) (Mitchell, 2002). Cel animation was a breakthrough in 1914 (it reduced the work required to produce drawn animation, while allowing the work to be divided among specialists) (Mitchell, 2002). Though CGI in conjunction with animated movies dates back about 30 years, the technology itself stretches back even further.
