a wave of corporate scandals on a global basis had governments of various countries scrambling to find ways in which they could stem the growing tide of public frustration over
the apparent laxity of private businesses. In some cases, it was legislation that was put forth to help private sector organizations come to terms about what might be legal (or
not). In other ways, it has been an increase in self-regulation. No matter what, however, it is the compliance officer of a
financial services organization that assumes responsibility for keeping up with an organizations ability to both learn the rules and regulations and for ensuring that those rules and regulations are implemented
and followed within the letter of the law, at least as much as possible. In this paper, well examine further the requirements
and job duties of the compliance officer and determine why, especially in the area of financial services, this job has become more than a simple rubber stamp type of position
to one that helps a company stay on the straight and narrow in terms of reporting and generally doing business. Before beginning,
