so would not be a very positive thing to do. Poet, writer and religious leader Ralph Waldo Emerson was known for support of
individuals against the government. This is extremely clear in the aptly named essay "Self-Reliance." The main themes of this particular essay, crafted in 1841, are to have a strong enough
self-belief so that an individual doesnt slide into conformity or complacency. Whats fascinating about this essay is the time during which it was written - most of us consider that
the U.S. in the mid-19th century was one of bold adventurers who were forever scouting out final frontiers in the west, while coming up with some amazing technological innovations in
the east. Yet there was Emerson, cautioning against imitation and conformity and encouraging readers to trust their instincts: "There is a time in every mans education when he arrives at
the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide . . . that . . . no kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil
bestowed on that plot of ground which is given to him to till." Furthermore, he writes "Trust thyself . . . accept the place the divine providence has found for
you . . ." In other words, envy, jealousy and anger at others for "doing better" is out; while authenticity, originality and trusting in oneself should be the mantra of
