Taking the Field: Women, Men and Sports by Michael Messner states that women are still struggling hard for the same type of recognition in sports that men have enjoyed for some many years, while the Eitzens explore the consistent poverty of women. Core Arguments in Messners Book A paradox exists within competitive womens sports. While openly supportive of a womans successes in the sports arena, many have also descried the lack of femininity exhibited by women sports figures. How do the top women sports figures deal with this type of societal pressure: to be the top in their field, and yet still remain feminine? Evidence When the US Womens Soccer team won the World Cup Soccer Championship, they proved that women could be team players, rather than solo stars, but also proved that with strength and courage could come beauty and grace. The stereotype of the female athlete has been slowly erased over the last few years, but it still has a very long way to go. Product endorsements which allow the women to be shown both as competitors and as women have aided in the movement to reverse some of the earlier discrimination that women athletes faced. One of the most recent examples of this are the Williams sisters, Venus and Serena. Both women are outstanding athletes, at the top of their respective games. And, yet, their singular style in clothing, manner of dress, and hairstyles have inspired many other women who have never had the aspiration to pick up a tennis racket.
