have now pushed it behind the euro, the trading currency of the European Union. During February 2008, the euro hit an all time high against the US dollar (European Social
Policy, 2008). As recently as January, a poll conducted by Financial Times/Harris showed that the majority of continental Europeans believed the
euro will overtake the dollar as the worlds primary reserve currency within the next decade (Weil, 2009). If that werent enough, even 48% of Americans polled agreed (Weil, 2009). But
a soaring euro isnt necessarily something that everyone is thrilled about - a very strong euro means that exports arent as readily received in other countries (Weil, 2009).
However, determining how the euro stacks up against the dollar can be an interesting study. In the chart below, weve taken the euros
value against $1 USD during the period between January 17-February 14, 2009. Well study the fluctuations and try to provide an explanation for some of the more obvious ones.
