a specific initiative indicated, well use that of community policing, or volunteer police forces, as theyre sometimes called. As community resources and budgets are stretched thinner, police departments turn to
these neighborhood watch groups to help them keep an eye on things, and to help prevent potential crimes before they happen.
In far North Dallas, for example, a neighborhood association has pulled together a community neighborhood watch, also known as a VIP patrol. Each night, two members of this patrol drive
around the streets of the neighborhood between 7 and 10 p.m. to keep an eye out for anything suspicious. The things they watch for include open garage doors (as thieves
have been stealing items from garages), open gates and trash cans put in the middle of back driveways. This latter situation
could be a sign that a potential thief has scoped out the house and believes its a good target. When any
of these things are found, the patrol calls the homeowner to let him/her know whats going on. This type of thing helps out the Dallas police department, as it helps
prevent potential crimes before they happen. The citizen watch also keeps in touch with the department to report suspicious activity. The
watch also has the power to make a citizens arrest, though its recommended members not do so because of the potential danger.
To become a member of this VIP patrol, members are required to take a day-long training session, and to participate in refresher courses once a year.
