communications situations in which the particular medium could be used; the two communications systems in which it would be appropriate to use the medium; five non-verbal communications elements characteristic of
the medium, types of "noise" that might delay, distort or destroy the message; types of feedback available, communication skills necessary and if the medium is appropriate for sending the urgent
message. E-mail and the Internet are used under certain situations -- to communicate generally non-confidential information; to communicate to many people;
to communicate to those who are geographically dispersed; to communicate quickly and to communicate easily. However, the problems here we face with Internet and e-mail include confidentiality protection, lack of
personal interaction and even the lack of employees who might be both computer literature and who might have access to a computer terminal (Federico and Bowley, 1996).
Overuse of the "reply all" button is a frequent complaint, too (Anonymous, 2005). Cell phones,
on the other hand, are also good for long-distance conversations (almost anywhere and any time), and again, if you want to get information quickly to the intended party. They are
also good in an emergency, when something has to be communicated to immediately; they basically help people keep in touch, no matter where they are.
But there are problems here as well -- cell phones are known for being extraordinary distractions, especially when they ring at inopportune times (Anonymous, 2005).
