is most noticeable in social situations with human beings, and none more aptly portrayed than in the classic movie, Guess Whos Coming to Dinner? a Stanley Kramer film, or a
more recent movie along the same lines, by Spike Lee, called, Do the Right Thing. Both movies examine interracial relationships, but both are set against the backdrop of their own
era. What is interesting to note are the differences in perceptions about race and relationships and how they differ based on the era in which they were created. All Matthew
Drayton has planned on doing was playing some golf. However, his golf game is interrupted when his daughter, Joanna, drops in on them unexpectedly with an announcement. Shes getting married.
For any 1960s couple, this is a cause for celebration. However, the celebration takes on new proportions when they actually meet their soon to be son in law. Mr.
and Mrs. Drayton are ecstatic at first to learn that their daughter is marrying a doctor. Of course, when they meet John it is all they can do to remain
civil. Their problem is not with his choice of occupation, but with his color. He is black. Without giving the parents much time to accept the idea, Joanna urges them
to give them their blessing before the evening is over. What is interesting to see is that Joanna has turned out just as the Draytons have raised her
to be: without prejudice. However, in seeing their principles in action, they are caught off balance. The very people who are upset by the marriage are those who should be
