In this day and age, and in the current job market, employers will look for, and hire, talent from wherever they can find it (What makes for global
success in a borderless workplace, 2010). This means a highly diverse workforce of individuals from different countries, all bringing with them different languages, cultures and backgrounds.
The consequences of this scenario were apparent at the Maple Leaf Foods hog processing plant in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada. Harder (2010) writes that "it took four
languages and almost 16 hours to explain a new contract to nearly 2,300 employees" at this plant (p. 8). Why? Because 75% of the pork plants workers were new immigrants,
who were fast-tracked under a provincial nominee program (Harder, 2010). "The meetings highlight the challenge of manage several cultures and languages in a workforce," comments Harder (p. 8).
Nor is this challenge going away any time soon - as Leininger and Javidan (2010) point out, for example, a typical Nokia phone produced in
China nonetheless has more than 1,500 components coming from literally dozens of production points around the world. Then there is the online
connection - many international workers conduct business virtually - in other words, theyre talking with each other on their computers, rather than face-to-face. While this is wonderful in that it
