critics have stated that this may very well have been Shakespeares premier play because it seems to be a forerunner to several themes which are explored in future plays. The
use of the chain as symbolism throughout the play is indicative of Shakespeares ability to pull together a series of coincidences to form the backdrop for a remarkable play.
As the play opens, the audience is shown that a local merchant named Egeon has been condemned to die for violation of a travel ban between the cities of Syracuse
and Ephesus. Egeon has unwittingly broken this law because he is in search of his family whom he was estranged from over twenty five years previously. His wife and one
of his twin sons were thought to be in Syracuse. The Duke is so touched by Egeons tale that he gives Egeon a stay of execution, for a day, so
that he might raise bail of a thousand marks. Having the money, the Duke would be so inclined to spare his life. The comedy of errors begins when his son
Antipholus (the twin who has been living with him) also comes to Syracuse. In a case of mistaken identity, the missing twins wife, grabs Antipholus and his servant Dromio home
for supper. Meanwhile her REAL husband returns home, but is denied entry by Antipholus slave. During the course of the meal, Antipholus, who is not married in real life, falls
for Adrianas sister. However, thinking that Antipholus is actually Antipholas, she is incensed that her sisters husband should be making a pass at her. Things compound themselves
when a gold chain, ordered by Adrianas Antipholas, is given to his twin brother by accident. When the merchant asks for money, Antipholus from Ephesus refuses to pay for it
