Colombia is located on the northern portion of South America, between Panama and Venezuela, Ecuador and Panama (CIA Factbook, 2005). Two oceans border this country -- the Caribbean
Sea and the North Pacific Ocean (CIA Factbook, 2005). The climate is mainly tropical along the coast and eastern part of the country, while it is cooler in the highlands
(CIA Factbook, 2005). In terms of "natural disasters," the country (especially the highlands) is prone to volcanic eruptions, earthquake and droughts (CIA
Factbook, 2005). Additionally, the environment is of huge concern. For one thing, deforestation, in an attempt to prevent guerillas from hiding out in the forests, has taken its toll on
the land. Soil and water quality is also dubious, due to overuse of pesticides, and air pollution (especially in the capital, Bogota) is a problem as well from vehicle emissions
(CIA Factbook, 2005). There are actually four major parts of Colombia -- Los Llanos (the plains); the northern Caribbean coast, the eastern
Pacific Ocean coast and the southern Amazon rainforest (Wikipedia, 2004). More than half the country consists of mountains (Wikipedia, 2004). Population/Social Institutions
