nonprofit company exists to serve the public, or benefit other than an accumulation of wealth for owners or investors (Luckert, 2004). Nonprofits typically are classified as either member-serving, such as
addressing a select number of individuals, or for the overall public (Luckert, 2004). Furthermore, the companies can be found in many forms, such as charities (Salvation Army); foundations (Ford Foundation);
social welfare/advocacy organizations (American Civil Liberties Union or the National Rifle Association) and professional/trade associations (chamber of commerce) (Luckert, 2004). By
their very nature, however, nonprofits can sometimes be at odds, or competitive, when it comes to the very issues theyre trying to address. As a result, while the entities are
out to do good, they sometimes operate at cross purposes. This is especially true when it comes to animal welfare. The animal
welfare community ranges from the very radical People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and the Animal Liberation Front to various Societies for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and
local animal rescue groups. All of these organizations are after the same things - protection of animals - but because their methods in achieving this goal differs so hugely, they
dont have enough resources to really do the job effectively. In this paper, well examine three animal welfare organizations in the Dallas,
TX area: Operation Kindness, Texas Association for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Feral Friends. Well discuss the mission and goals of these organizations, determine the gaps in service,
