be the case in Charles Fraziers novel, Cold Mountain and his main characters journey. This story is set in the Civil War Era and chronicles the struggle of two people
as they make a personal odyssey which will eventually result in their own personal healing. Paralleled with the massive wound that the Civil War left on the country as a
whole, this book chronicles on a personal level the emotional scars left on the people who survived. Inman is a Confederate soldier who is so badly scarred from the war
that he has lost all his regard for humanity. A deserter from the army, he is in search of the meaning in life, what his purpose is supposed to be.
Ada is a sheltered and cultured daughter of a rich man who suddenly finds herself alone and unable to cope with the many stresses of daily living. Her odyssey is
to discover that inner strength that had always been there. They find one another, and in the end, aid each others personal search. . Ruby is a neighbor woman who
is not much older that Ada. However, she is vastly more knowledgeable than Ada when it comes to the ways of the mountain and the running of the farm. Ada
leans on her heavily for advice and help in maintaining the farm after her fathers death. In fact, Ruby helps Ada take care of her father when he becomes terribly
ill. Ruby serves many purposes for Ada. She is a confidant, so she serves to allow the reader insight into Adas intimate thoughts. She also enables the reader to
