to get back on their feet. US Air and US Airlines, two of the airlines that were targeted in the terrorist attacks, may help to innovate these two airlines.
Code sharing was developed so as to allow for a greater flexibility amongst air carriers to book empty seats on their flights. Since empty seats cost the airlines money, this
seemed to be a viable way to increase sales and reduce the likelihood that some flights would fly with more empty seats than passengers. When an airline engages in
code sharing they allow the two letter identification code to be used by the flights of another airline as they appear in the computer. In other words, US Airs designation
would be US. This prefix could be utilized by any airline whose name also began with the letters US, such as the US express planes, and others. The benefit
to code sharing, beside the fuller planes, is that it allows the passenger to reduce the number of connecting flights that they might ordinarily have been required to make. Conceivably,
a person could book a flight on US Air and fly to any city that US Air or United or any other US prefix plane had an agreement with. Participating
airlines generally coordinate their codes and their schedules so as to make this possible for the traveler. This allows, also, for a one stop check in and baggage check has
