have been made in computer technology and global communication over the past couple of decades, the use of computer-mediated communication has started to play a central and vital role in
education, especially with regard to distance learning as well as conventional classroom methodologies. CMC can loosely be described as any means which facilitates communication via the Internet and the Web,
but there are several specific subgroups within this broad umbrella term.
Email, for example, is used to exchange single messages between individuals, whereas mailing lists allow larger groups of people to access these messages. Usenet incorporates newsgroups,
which are public discussion forums to which messages are sent and replied. Theoretically, each group is focused on a particular theme or topic (such as the works of a particular
author, or a recreational activity such as gardening), but in practice the discussions frequently diverge into other topics or more social exchanges. Moderated newsgroups have a team of moderators who
"vet" messages before they are posted on the group, to make sure that they are related to the subject in hand, are not abusive, and so on. Unmoderated newsgroups do
not check or censor messages in this way, and the discussions tend to be less structured and often rather more heated in tone.
Discussion boards, which are perhaps the most well-known aspect of CMC in an educational context, allow
