important to the cause of freedom was the creation of the 54th Massachusetts toward the north ultimately winning the war? As
we know it today, the 54th Massachusetts ended up becoming the most famous black regiment of the Civil War. The regiments claim to fame was that it led the attack,
in 1863, against Fort Wagner, which was a Confederate earthwork that defended the entrance to the Charleston harbor (McPherson 686). This particular
battle was important for two reasons. First, it proved that an all-black regiment could fight as hard as a white one and succeed (McPherson 686). Though the 54th ended up
falling back (after holding Wagner for an hour), and sustaining huge losses, it was still considered a victory of sorts for the black regiment (McPherson 686). Even more important, it
changed the Northern perception of black men (McPherson 686). Prior to the battle, black regiments were generally held in poor regard which was surprising, considering that the North was considered
highly supportive of abolitionists. In fact, just prior to the bravery shown at Wagner by the 54th regiment, Democratic rioters in New York were in the habit of lynching black
people and had even burned the Colored Orphan Asylum (McPherson 687). Otherwise, however, blacks has made some inroads as soldiers. They served
