The student could begin this paper on Citizen Kane with the question: Rosebud. Does this really mean anything to anyone? Citizen Kane, debuted in 1941, and covers the discovery and the uncovering, layer by layer, of the mysterious life of a multi-millionaire publishing mogul, whose last dying words, "Rosebud" leave everyone scrambling to establish its meaning. One of those who are searching for the answer is a reporter, who through a series of interviews with several of Kanes friends and colleagues finally comes to some conclusions of his own while the film audience are the only ones privy to the answer. David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson in their book, Introduction to Film, state that this movie is most interesting because it utilizes the flashback as a device for garnering information about the characters. In a series of flashback scenes, it becomes apparent that Kane, though quite wealthy, does not know who he is anymore. Having risen from humble beginnings, it seems as if those dormant roots have begun to pull at him, reminding him of who he once was, and who he might have been had he not become wealthy and an ambitious businessman. This is evidenced by his statement ""You know, Mr. Bernstein, if I hadnt been very rich, I might have been a really great man...I think I did pretty well under the circumstances"(Dirks).
