the true writer knows is that words like to play. This tumbling about in ones head can be, for most writers, cathartic. In Sandra Cisneross case, her words took her
back to play in the streets of her Chicago neighborhood where she grew up as a child. Her words took her back to the very roots of discovery of self
as she began to identify those characteristics and cultural strengths within herself, her Latino heritage, and her female identity. In her works, Barbie Q and Eleven, one can find elements
of this exploration of heritage, gender, and perspective in abundance. "when you wake up on your eleventh birthday you expect to feel eleven, but you dont," thinks Rachel, the main
protagonist in Cisneross short story, Eleven. This early statement clarifies the problem that Rachel is going to face throughout the story. It asks the question of "What does it mean
to be a certain age?" Are there expectations which come with this?" In Cisneross mind, the answer is yes. From this early paragraph, one gains insight into the world
of the Latino girl, becoming woman. There are certain expectations that go along with being eleven, and with being Latin, and with being female. Some of those expectations are just.
Some of them are not. Frequently, it is the combination of heritage and gender which cause the greatest problems, as Rachel discovers. "Maybe because Im skinny, maybe because she doesnt
like me, that stupid Sylvia Saldivar says, "I think it belongs to Rachel." An ugly sweater like that all raggedy and old, but Mrs. Price believes her. Mrs. Price takes
