However, a closer look reveals that historically, the lines have always been blurred and it is this constant struggle between secular and sacred where one can find some of the most critical doctrines evolving. This paper, the student will want to state, as a thesis, will endeavor to illustrate the nature of Christianity and its relation to the secular state. Pre-constantinian period (Roman Empire) In the beginning may have been the Word, but in fact, the Roman Empire and many of earliest mankinds societies seem to have overlooked that edict. In fact, the early Christian church seemed to thrive under the rule of the purely pagan state of the Roman Empire. The Romans worshiped a multitude of state supported Gods and Goddesses. Interestingly enough, though, Christianity not only found a foothold but seems to have spread for the next three hundred years without any sort of force (Inquisition style). This is not to state that Christians were not persecuted for their beliefs, however. Many Christians who were caught practicing Christianity were executed as atheists because they would not worship the state supported gods. However, the growing tide of Christianity not only flourished, but survived. Why? Both scripture and the recorded history of the Church give us clues as to why this might be. What is most astonishing is that in the past those Christian states did not provide the best of possible climates for Christianity to thrive, but rather, it was the secular states in which Christianity found its strongest holds. This is simply to be reasoned that the gospel is more readily accepted, tested and proven true to those who are living in a secular state.
