being challenged. One such challenge came from a leading reformer in the early church, named Alexander Campbell. His work, titled The Christian System, cause quite a stir, yet had such
a lasting impact on the evolution of many protestant faiths as to secure him a place in religious and educational history. Campbell seems to have railed against the idea that
only the rich were destined for higher education. He believed, it can be assumed, that having a literate nation would make her one of the leaders in the world. To
that end, and seeming to borrow from much of the Scottish enlightenment movement, he believed that the key to securing a fantastic and prosperous nation lay in the education of
the masses who still clung to deeply ingrained prejudices, superstitions and illiteracy. This rejection of the commonly held norms for education spilled over in a big way to the field
of religion. By all accounts, he began life as a child raised in the Presbyterian church. However, as an adult he was sickened, it would seem, by the hypocrisy he
saw there. Most accounts state that he based many of his beliefs on the New Testament and made it accessible for many who were living on the frontiers of the
newly emerging country. His treatise, The Christian System, was designed for both the layman to read and understand, but also for those who were pursuing religious studies. He
sought to replace the idea of sectarianism and to establish a new interpretation of the New Testament. His cry for unity is a strong theme throughout the Christian System. However,
