of the Victorian Era began an earnest search for an identity of their own. Kate Chopin, as one of the earliest to embrace feminist ideals, expressed them aptly through the
character of Mrs. Mallard in her short story, The Story of an Hour. It is with mixed emotions that Mrs. Mallard learns of her husbands
death on the railroad. One of the hints that this ambivalence will be occurring is in the setting. When she is told of her husbands death she goes to her
room and sinks into an easy chair. The significance is that it is facing West. Since the sun sets in the West, one can see this as a symbolic representation
of an ending. And, yet, though she is facing West (or death) it is springtime and everywhere she sees the hint and promise of new life.
"She could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees that were all aquiver with the new spring life. The delicious breath of rain was
in the air. In the street below a peddler was crying his wares. The notes of a distant song which some one was singing reached her faintly, and countless sparrows
were twittering in the eaves"(Chopin). The other indication that she will be experiencing an ambivalence toward his death is the use of the clouds
and the sky as setting. Clouds and sky, especially a blue sky, indicates freedom. As expressed in these lines, one begins to understand, as she finally does, that his death
signals a type of release from a type of repression. "She was young, with a fair, calm face, whose lines bespoke repression and even a certain strength. But now there
