the Sung Period. What did the writer focus on the intersection of women and marriage? Though this question is a little
difficult to interpret, well assume it to mean what happened to women in this dynasty when they ended up getting married. Women in this particular dynasty were in an interesting
situation - from the age of 10 or so on, they were separated from men, meaning they had to remain inside the house - even fathers could not enter their
daughters rooms after theyd been engaged. They stayed behind screens and simply didnt mingle with the men. The womens responsibilities, as well, focused on "spinning, weaving, sewing, and that when
they leave the house they must cover their faces . . ." (p. 5). This seemed to be the case mainly
among the well-to-do; farmers, it seemed, were not so careful about segregating the sexes (namely because the women and their daughters were needed to help cultivate and gather food). Gender
separation, the author pointed out, was largely restricted to the upper class of the society. What were the writers principal sources? The
writer, for this, relied primarily on both pictorial representations of the period (through highly stylized paintings) and writings of the period as well, as well as the so-called "rule books"
when it came to conduct between men and women. Clearly, she couldnt rely on interviews of the period, as most of the principles who lived through the times were no
