The idea behind globalization is that, when countries find their "specialty" niches, everyone benefits, as companies in these countries put out the particular specialty product to satisfy everyones demand worldwide. As a result, goes the theory, all societies benefit from it. As with any theory, however, the reality is vastly different. Even the United States, which is considered to be among the wealthiest nations in the world, is seeing some disturbing downtrends in manufacturing, due from increasing exports from Mexico and China. Despite the best efforts among U.S. manufacturers (such as steel companies), these exports (which become U.S. imports) are definitely impacting companies and jobs in the U.S. manufacturing sector. One issue with China is that not only is it increasing its import quota to the U.S. (within guidelines, at any rate), its also keeping its exchange rate of its currency artificially low (Anonymous, 2004). What this means is that it provides an unfair trade advantage over the U.S., because China can under price its imports, and has done so to the tune of up to 40 percent (Anonymous, 2004). What does this mean to the U.S.? A huge trade deficit -- and loss of millions of manufacturing jobs (Anonymous, 2004). In terms of the trade deficit, according to statistics from 2003, the U.S. deficit with China was at $125 billion -- which is the largest it has with any country (Anonymous, 2004).
