1997. The economies of many of the Asian countries are linked -- so much so that what impacts one economy tends to impact them all. Even to this day, many
of the Asian economies continue to struggle (in fact, the entire world is in an economic slump). One economy that continues to
grow, however, is that of Chinas. Ever since the country opened its doors to world trade during the 1970s, the Chinese economy has been on the upswing, with its growth
slow and steady and its rate of consumption rising. Also adding to Chinas growth has been Hong Kong, which has been praised for its free market style economy. Because of
Chinas expansion, there is little wonder that this country is considered the jewel in the Asian crown, the hope for the strength of the so-called "Tiger" (i.e., Asian economies). Chinas
ascession to the World Trade Organization has also helped it to become an economic powerhouse as well. The question we try to
answer in this paper isnt so much about Chinese expansion, however, as it is about the impact of the growth on the region and its neighbors. As we mentioned in
the introduction of this paper, many of the Asian economies are linked with one another (even in a loose alliance), meaning that what benefits one economy tends to benefit all
(and by the same token what can bring one economy down can bring them all down as well). This makes sense -- most countries in this day and age are
allied, at least when it comes to trade -- and nowhere is this more true than among the members of ASEAN, which are Asian nations allied into a single trade
