years, children have been at the mercy of those who take care of them. For most children this equates into a normal, loving childhood. However, for others, this translates into
a childhood of nightmarish proportions. Therefore, it goes without saying that there should be laws which protect children from their own parents. There have been
several movies and books over the last few years which have taken on this difficult topic of child abuse. Often the books and the movies tell the tale as a
remembered past by an adult who has survived childhood abuse. Their stories and experiences serve as a chilling reminder that children have no voice in this country and as such,
are assumed to have no rights. It is estimated that two out of ten children suffer abuse by the time they reach eighteen years
of age(Boulware, 2002). Of course, this has to be considered to be a conservative figure, since a good deal of the time this crime is not reported, or, in the
case of many children, is repressed and not remembered. This is the case of the Wingo children, Tom and Savannah in Pat Conroys novel, Prince of Tides.
At the opening of the novel it becomes clear that Tom Wingo is having some sort of emotional or mental crises. This is brought on by the fact
that he has lost his job, his marriage is on the rocks, and by all observations, he is an alcoholic. Just to prove that he doesnt have the corner on
