when toddlers throw tantrums in public, mothers and fathers seem helpless, immobilized (Hemphill, 1998). By the time the toddler becomes a teenager, parents resort to bargaining, rather than discipline (Hemphill,
1998). The result? "Ive seen parents suffer abuse and disrespect that even a teenagers friends wouldnt tolerate" Hemphill writes (Hemphill, 1998, p. 13).
That same "hands-off" policy, she continues, also has a dire effect on issues such as prejudice and racism. Parents who may believe they arent racists, but nonetheless adopt a
"hands-off" policy when it comes to prejudice, end up raising kids who view their parents as adults (i.e., role models) who are lacking in courage but have a great deal
of immaturity (Hemphill, 1998). The result are children who mimic the same behaviors (Hemphill, 1998). Then there are instances in which racism
is passed along from parent to child. For example, if one were to examine a group of young children playing together, it should be noted that no matter the color
of the skin, children get along (unless theyre fighting over a toy, but thats a different matter). Its only when parents let the child know that color matters is when
bigotry and racism comes into play. This can certainly happen in two ways. First, theres the obvious way - the parent forbidding
the child to play with a friend whose skin is a different color. In this way, the child learns that the other child with different colored skin is a "bad"
