there are many ways in which a researcher can examine a life from birth to adulthood. In dealing with the concept of life span psychology, this paper will examine two questions. The first question is: What are the advantages and disadvantages of cross-sectional and longitudinal research in exploring sexual abuse in early childhood and how it effects personality development in later childhood, adolescence and adulthood? The second question draws on a statement by Erickson in that babies control and raise families much as families control them. This paper will examine how this is so through three examples. Research into sexual abuse in early childhood When researching the issue of sexual abuse in early childhood and how it impacts development in later childhood, adolescence and adulthood, there are two methods of research that will be under discussion in this paper. These two methods are cross-sectional research and longitudinal research. Each method of research has its benefits and disadvantages. In using the cross-sectional research method, the researcher studies people of different ages, or in different points of their lives, at the same time. For example, if researching sexual abuse in early childhood, by using this particular method, the researcher would study a group of children, adolescents and adults at the same time. In setting up the research, the researcher would need to pinpoint subjects in each target group that had been the victims of sexual abuse in early childhood. The cross-sectional research method is advantageous in that it takes a short amount of time. The researcher can collect data in a specific period of time and then is done with the subjects.
